It's beginning to look a lot like...summer!

With warmer weather around the corner, we're taking extra precautions when it comes to working (and playing) outdoors. Are you?

Our outstanding safety record (over 9.5 years and counting without a lost day incident from work) means we know a thing or two about how to stay safe when seasons change and temperatures are on the rise.

Keep the following in-mind before you head out in the heat this summer:

  • Avoid heat stress
    • Stay hydrated - studies suggest 1 cup of cool water every 15-20 minutes
    • Take plenty of breaks in the shade
    • Be aware of heat index advisories
    • Avoid caffeine or alcoholic beverages as they accelerate dehydration
  • Wear a minimum of SPF 30 sunblock to avoid burning; reapply as needed
  • Water safety
    • Wear a lifejacket
    • Obey posted water safety guidelines
  • Use safety gear
    • Wear earplugs when mowing the lawn
    • Remember your helmet when biking
  • Check yourself for parasite hitchhikers (cases of tick-borne diseases reached a record level in 2010)
  • Have your cell phone handy in case of an emergency
  • Watch for poison ivy
