Bay West presents at International Conference

Bay West Project Manager Paul Raymaker presented alongside Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Project Manager Erin Endsley at the Ninth International Conference on Remediation and Management of Contaminated Sediments. Together, they prepared and exhibited a poster presentation on Ambient Concentrations of Chemicals of Concern in Sediment for the U.S. Steel Duluth Works Site.
Bay West has been assisting the MPCA to clean up the 73-mile stretch of St. Louis River along the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, termed the Area of Concern (AOC), which includes the Duluth/Superior Harbor and discharges to Lake Superior. Numerous upland and estuarine environments are being remediated following ~70 years of steel manufacturing and coke production.
The approach involves mining a mass of environmental data collected over years of investigation activities of the entire AOC, and performing extensive statistical analyses. This information provides the MPCA with a practical basis for determining the best approach to clean up and restores the area – specifically, how to reduce the number of Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs), like impacted swim beaches, fishing areas, and other contaminated native habitats.
Sponsored by The Battelle Memorial Institute, this annual conference is designed for and presented by scientists, engineers, regulators, remediation site owners, constructors, and other environmental professionals representing universities, government agencies, consultants, and R&D and service firms from around the world. It is a forum for sharing research results, practical experiences, and opportunities associated with remediating, restoring and maintaining the environmental and economic vitality of waterways.
This is the second time Bay West has been invited to present at this sediments-focused conference. In 2006, Bay West presented a unique geotube remediation approach for cleaning up contaminated sediments at the Badger Ammunition Plant, WI.
