Emergency Preparedness and Hazardous Materials Training

Having the right training is critical when dealing with emergencies. Ensure your responders are ready to respond by scheduling the training they need to do the job safely.

8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher

Annual required refresher training for all individuals with 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER training.

24-Hour HAZWOPER Technician

Required for workers occasionally at a hazardous waste site that are unlikely to be exposued to hazardous materials above the permissible exposure limit; or workers regularly on a fully characterized hazardous waste site with no expsoures above the permissible exposure limit; or individuals designated as hazardous material emergency responders that respond to the point of release to stop the spill or leak.

40-hour HAZWOPER Specialist

Required for all hazardous waste site general workers engaged in hazardous substance removal with actual or potential exposure to health hazards.

8-hour First Responder Operations

Required for individuals designated to provide initial response to a release of hazardous material at a safe distance using defensive actions to limit the spread of the spill.

Incident Command

For individuals designated to implement the incident command system and assume control of the incident scene beyond the first responder awareness level.

Adult First Aid/CPR/AED

Hands on training for individuals designated as medical first responders. Course includes rescue breathing, CPR, hands only CPR, proper use of an AED, choking management, and basic injury management.

Chemical Safety

A more indepth, hands-on hazard communication training based on established company-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for individuals that handle, pour, mix, and work around chemicals. Hazard Communication and Employee Right To Know training content is included in the course if these topics have not been taught separately as a prerequisite.

Small Spill Cleanup

Hands-on instruction for cleaning up small spills that can be addressed by the individuals working with the chemicals. Chemical Safety and Hazard Communication are included if these topics have not been taught separately as a prerequisite.

Lab Safety

Training on company-specific Chemical Hygiene Plan and laboratory safety standard operating procedures.

Drills

Our instructors can help facilitate, coach, or stage hands-on drill events for emergency response plans including evacuations, severe weather, medical scenarios and/or hazardous material emergencies.

Respirable Crystalline Silica

Training on the recognition and control of the hazards associated with respirable crystalline silica in the work place. Course can focus on construction activities or general industry processes.

Dress-out and Drill

This course is set up for individuals that have completed an on-line 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER course and need to complete hands-on dress out in chemical protective clothing, respiratory protection, and drill scenairos with decontamination.

Basic Compliance Training

MN AWAIR

Most employers are required to have an AWAIR (A Workplace Accident and Injury Reduction) program and to train employees on the program annually. Bay West can help develop company AWAIR programs and develop customized to training for employees.

Emergency Action Plan

Most employers are required to have an emergency action plan to facilitate and organize employer and employee actions during workplace emergencies. Bay West can help develop company emergency action plans and provide applicable training.

Employee Right to Know

Mosts employers are required to train employees on the hazards they face in the work place. Bay West can help develop a written employee right to know program and provide customized training specific to the company's hazards.

Fire Prevention Plan

The purpose of the fire prevention plan is to prevent a fire from occurring in the work place. This plan describes flammable and combustible fuels and systems in place to prevent fires.

Hearing Conservation

Employers must institute annual hearing conservation training for all employees exposed to 8-hour time-weighted-average noise exposure above 85 dbA. Bay West can help determine if your employee exposures fall into this category and develop and deliver customized training.

High Hazard Activity Training

Confined Space Entry (& non-entry rescue)

Workers who enter a confined space must be trained on the recognition and control of the potential hazards and the equipment necessary to safely enter a confined space and get back out if something goes wrong. We utilize simulated vertical entry at our training facility to offer a full hands-on course.

Aerial Lifts

Only trained and authorized persons are allowed to operate an aerial lift. Training must include: recognition and prevention of fall hazards, electrical hazards, and falling object hazards; recognizing unsafe conditions; correct operation of the lift; maximum intended load; pre-use inspections; fall protection; and a hands-on evaluation of operator skill.

Overhead Crane

Only designated personnel are permitted to operate a crane. Proper training is the best way to ensure these designated personnel are qualified to perform specific duties.

Machine Guarding

Any moving machine part, function, or process that may cause worker injury must be safeguarded. Workers must be trained to recognize the importance of these safeguards and how to properly adjust, maintain, and inspected the necessary safeguards.

Ergonomics

Repetitive motion, awkward postures, and high exertion activities have the potential to cause musculoskeletal disorders affecting muscles, nerves, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. Proper training on identification of ergonomic risk factors and strategies to adjust workplace elements to reduce ergonomic risk is important for reducing risk of injury.

Laser Safety

Lasers are used in construction and manufacturing to measure, align, mark, cut, and other tasks. Using and working around high power lasers can be dangers if the hazards are not understood and controlled. If class 3 or 4 lasers are in use, a laser safety program managed by a Laser Safety Officer and user laser safety training is required.

Rigging/Slings

Riggers and sling users for cranes and overhead lifting need training in proper sling selection, inspection, storage, and operational use slings for rigging loads.

Welding

The wide range of safety and health hazards associated with welding, cutting, and brazing suggest the need for more than just basic Hazard Communication Training. Ensure your welders understand and know how to control the hazards associated with welding, cutting and brazing activities.

Hand and Power Tools

Tools specific training is recommended for workers to cover proper use of tools, required PPE, proper storage, and inspection for damaged or defective tools.

Ionizing Radiation

Understand the associated hazards and how workers can monitor and protect themselves from various sources of ionizing radiation.

Non-ionizing Radiation

Laser, microwaves, and ultra violet radiation are all considered Non-ionizing Radiation. Ensure your workers are trained to recognize these hazards and know how to work safely manage the hazards.

Material Handling

Material handling risks range from the hazards associated with mechanical equipment like forklifts and cranes, to sprains, strains, and back injuries associated with manual lifting. Training operators on established standards operating procedures can help reduce the risk of injury.

ANSI Z10

ANSI Z10 is a consensus standard for a safety management system established by the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP)

OHSAS 18001

OHSAS 18001 is an internal standard that provides an audit-able framework for certification of a company's safety management system. OHSAS 18001 was replaced by ISO 45001 in 2018

Safety Committee

All employers of more than 25 employees must establish a joint labor-management safety committee.

Inspection vs Audit

An inspection is a physical check of physical conditions to identify hazards and potential risk. Regular inspections are common methods of continuously looking for conditions that can cause an accident. An audit is a review of business process activities to determine if these activities are following the established program or procedures. Audits are conducted to evaluate how well the business process is followed.

ISO 45001

ISO 45001 is an international consensus standard for occupational safety and health management systems. Companies can certify their management system to this standard to prove their business process meet these established requirements.

Hazard Control

Identified safety and health hazards need to be controlled to prevent employee injury and illness. Safety & Health professional follow an established Hierarchy of Controls to prioritize the most effective way of reducing risk of exposure to workers.

Accident Investigations

Identifying the root cause and contributing factors to accidents is the key to implementing proper corrective actions to make improvements. If "be more careful" is a common preventative measure listed on your accident report forms, your organization has some work to do. We can help.

Contractor Management

Companies hire "contractors" to perform duties outside the scope of the manufacturing operation like construction projects. Sometimes building and grounds maintenance is hired out to a contractor specializing in this service. Managing contractor safety is important to prevent the contractors from getting hurt at your facility and keeping the contractors from impacting your operations.

Exposure Assessments

"Do my workers need to wear a respirator?" An exposure assessment is conducted to answer this question. Exposure assessments evaluate worker exposure to health hazards. These health hazards may be noise, harmful dust, chemical vapors, or metal fume from a welding process. Sampling equipment and monitoring instruments are often needed to evaluate the level of exposure. Hiring an experienced Certified Industrial Hygienist is the best way to get started.

Risk Management

Risk is a combination of the likelihood of the occurrence of something that causes harm and the severity of the associated harm. Following a risk management methodology, a company can risk rank activities to prioritize what risks should be addressed first. Some times risk is managed by outsourcing certain activities to companies that specialize in that specific work activity. Conducting a strong risk assessment is the start of the risk management process.
